Blog Post 3
I really liked Lorrie Moore's article about "how to become a writer". I really liked her style of writing because it wasn't your conventional generic five paragraph essay and it kept you intrigued throughout the entire article. I strongly believe that Moore's essay was humorous. She successfully demonstrates that not all writers knew what they wanted to do when they grew up. She goes through several situations in life that most readers can relate to. I also think that most people think that most great writers are either emotionally unstable or mad at the world. So, Yes is my answer to whether or not being an "insane writer" is a cliche. My hair used to be much longer so people would stereotype me with either a surfer or a skateboarder when really I did little of each when I was growing up, but boy did I get mistaken for that type of person a lot. I believe that a "plot" is essentially a story line and no, articles don't always need a plot, but at the same time plot is important because it keeps the average reader intrigued in the story. As a reader, being intrigued in a story is everything because you find yourself wanting badly to know what is going to happen next. I think that a five paragraph essay is problematic for most writers because it is basically a formula that must be followed and it sort of discourages creativity. Trying to approach a five paragraph essay is difficult for me because I have all of these ideas that I want to go with so I end up writing my body paragraphs first and have a really tough time of getting those introductions and conclusions to where I want them. I'm used to writing 5 paragraph papers because I went to a college prep school where we had to write 5 paragraph essays since the 6th grade so I pretty used to the MLA format. Most of the essays that I like are the ones that aren't your average essay, that instead tell a story that has some sort of overall moral theme tied into the end. Reading about an argument with citations and quotes is just boring. The reader just wants to die and take a long deserved dirt nap. Anyways, overall I liked the Lorrie Moore's take on being a writer.

i agree with you on about everything you have said barron because you are my best friend in the entire world. But anyways when it came to how you responded about how readers are mad at the world and i think that it is great that you used that description because a good writer has to get mad at his work so that he can throw all of his emotions out onto the plate and prove his point. and i have to agree with the people who stereotyped you as a sufer cause i thought you were some drunken sufer hippie hahaha. but really i thought you were a surfer dude and then i met your brother. and of course i agree with you when it comes to the five paragraph essay because i can also say that i get lost from the beginning and dont know where to go from there.
