Just as Fulwiler said, the role of the audience in your writing is to show you how you are suppost to write that particular thing. The audience dictates the style, tone, direction, language/dialect, and format you will use for writing whatever it is you are writing. For example, Fulwiler brings up a good point that in a formal writing assignment the phrase "whatever it is" would not be proper and be looked down upon. However I used it in this assignment because this is a blog post and, for the most part, my audience in this case will be my own peers which allows me to portray my ideas in a more casual and conforsational tone than I would be allowed in say a term paper. A term paper would most likely be read only by the teacher so a more proffesional and formal tone would be used. Of couse this is a general rule and is not always the case. As fulwiler says it also depends on the topic the teacher wants yhou to write about. If the paper is a creative narrative than a certain level of personalization can be brought to it. the tone will be lighter and more conversational the style will change and so on. On the other hand if you are writing to a friend personally than there will usually be no level of proffessionalism what so ever. This would be an informal conversational tone and language. It is not an assignment so the rules of grammer are not as crusial. You can use slang terms that would usually be unacceptable in other writings and if you know spanish like I do, you might throw in some "spanglish" if the person your writing to also knows some spanish.
Also as it was inplied above it also depends on the medea in which you are writing. If it is an assignment on paper in class it may be a certain way and if it is a journal entry it would be another way. Advertisments on television, billboards, and magazines are writen very differently. They mostly have a persuassive tone because they are sell ing something, wheter it be a product or an idea. They also have a certain style that is used in advertisement and in journalism. It is a style that is ment to get the point accross in as little words as possible but still have the whole idea there where as in an essay or paper you can spen a good amount of time elaboraring and explainning your aurgument. Another medium that has come up recently is instant messenger and texting. This form of writing requires a certain style because of the limitation of space and the speed at which these types of writing are expected to be writen. It is perhaps the mosst informal writing you can find were it is allowed and encouraged to use short cuts an abbreviations to enable you to write faster. The most famous of these being OMG and LOL. Two experienced texters IM'ers can have a "texting/IM conversation" just as easily as they could a conversation face-to-face!
