voice and style

My style of writing comes out naturally as I write because I write as if I were having a conversation. This means that it is not that dificult for me to keep a consistant style in all my writing. However, when I have conversations with people in real life I tend to sometimes ramble so of cource this means that I have the same problem in my writing. I find it very interesting that the auther Vonnegut gave the least amount of advice on this subject. He simply says "I won't ramble on about that." In a way that is the perfect advise because it shows through example, dont ramble. I also liked the "Have the guts to cut" sugestion because I always have trouble cuting things from my papers. I will always find a way to rephrase the sentence or move it rahter than cut it out all together but I have gotten better at it. The "say what you mean" section was also helpful in that it ehlped me understand the reason behind the reading assignments in high school. I have always wished people would talk like that in real life because it sounds so cool but why wish when I an do so in my writing! I always try to elaborate vocabulary and am always trying to extent my vocabulary. Of cource I do know the danger of using a word you do not fully understand and then sounding stupid because of it. I have gotten some comments back from peers saying that they do njot understand my writing but I don't think it the vocabulary. It is the way I structure my sentences. I have an unconventional way of structure that I sometimes cannot keep in check and this sometimes confuses my reader. So in the future I will try to take Vonnegut's advice into account and say what I mean clearly.

I thought the rambling part was good, too. I do the same thing and end up throwing three or four semicolons in one sentence, then end up revising my paper later just to find out that I’ve slaughtered the English language and abused the poor little semicolons to death. It’s just so hard to not “ramble”. I mean, with so many things to say on one topic, and so many details that need to be mentioned in order to convey an exact meaning to the reader… well there I go, actually rambling while I’m talking about rambling. Sometimes I just have so many thoughts at once, and I kind of juggle them all and slap them on paper. That’s probably the problem for a lot of people with rambling. What we need to recognize is that some of our sentences can be separated into other sentences. Sometimes things that we throw in could be common knowledge, and thus unnecessary to mention.
