After reading Donna Steiner’s “Sleeping with alcohol”, I couldn’t really find any specific stereotype othern than her describing the characteristics of her roommate and stating that she wasn’t a drunk. I was expecting the story to be full of obvious stereotypes such as gender stereotypes. If Steiner was truly trying to prove that her roommate is not an alocholic, then she shouldn’t have described everything is such great detail. That detail made me picture in my head a scene from the movies, like in a trailer where there are bottles and caps everywhere among the cluttered house. I found myself feeling sorry for Steiner’s roommate because she said that she would never quit (sure signs of an alcoholic to me!) yet her best incentive for quitting would be love…That made me think. After that it made me think that she is definitely aware of her situation and deserves to get help. At the beginning I felt no remorse whatsoever and yes I admit that I stereotyped her as a flat out alcoholic but as I began to listen to her answer the questions (even though she was drunk) she still made sense and knew what she was talking about not like the usual drunks. Ususal drunks are unaware of what they are saying and often have slurred speech, in this case (during the interview) she did not have any of the typical ‘drunk’behaviors. This made me change my view of her until I got to the end where Steiner had to get up early in the morning to essentially take care of her roommate. One should not have to have the responsibility of taking care of someone unitl they have children. My stereotypes of drunks still remaisn the same, which is terrible but I picture them all the same.
