BP10

I wish to write this blog as a reaction to the reading “Just Walk on By: A Black Man Ponders His Power to Alter Public Space”. You know how on YouTube people will video them watch another video to catch their initial reaction? Well, that’s what I’d like to do here and then afterward discuss how I feel it relates to our current essay. Let’s begin.

I’ve just finished the first paragraph. I felt his description to be particularly powerful. Maybe I feel the way I do because at certain times in different situations I have felt as that woman did. Paranoia is what I gather to be the driving force, or maybe it could be perceived as a sense of awareness and survival in seemingly threatening situations? Probably both.

Second and third paragraph: I find it so interesting how we all live in fear. Fear that the guy walking down the street towards us (who could very well be just like Staples) is going to rob us or kill us. I know I have felt wary of passing others at night on a lonely street by myself and who’s to blame anyone for feeling that way when the Media presents it to us in all forms. From fiction to factual we are warned to beware that man coming down the street because he is dangerous but who is to know? How do you know? How can we be so judgmental?

The rest of the essay: Hahaha so I got kind of sucked into the essay and didn’t look up till I finished so…   I can definitely relate to the women who but on neutral faces and pretty much brace themselves for the worst. Sad, but true. It’s not that I wouldn’t respond if I was addressed but I don’t know it’s sort of way saying, “I’m a no nonsense kind of girl. Don’t speak to me unless you absolutely have to” is that too harsh? I don’t know it’s just what I do. =]

I think it was really wise of him to begin whistling, very wise indeed. I definitely can see how this could correlate to advertising. I mean think about it every tire, carpet cleaning and popular drink has a catchy tune accompanying it. It’s memorable but also it’s pleasing to the ear, comforting. Music generally accepted by everyone no one dislikes listening to music and in this way I believe advertisers “hook” an audience. Even if the product is worthless or even detrimental to persons being. By using a popular song marketing teams generate this sense that their product is widely accepted whether or not you think so.  Well just an idea anyway.

Ttyl,
