In Brent Staple’s story “Walk On By,” he talks about fear among people on city streets at night. Staples talks about how he has had many experiences where he has been mistaken as a rapist, mugger, thief, and other types of criminals. He also talks about how being black aids these accusations against him, and I can honestly say I believe he is right. There have been many cases of black muggers, as well as white muggers, but people tend to associate these criminal acts with black people. A story from my personal experience. When I visited Chicago, I became really creeped out one night when I thought a man was following me and some of my friends. He was wearing a hoody and jeans so it just added to my racing thoughts. Turns out he happened to walk up into the apartment building one down from the one we were staying at. I couldn’t tell what color his skin was because the hoody was over his head and it was really dark out, but it honestly didn’t matter at that point. I didn’t just think that the guy happened to be cold in fifty five degree weather. : ) Back to Brent Staples, he was being really sketchy too when he was walking up towards the girl in the beginning of the story, and just because he looked as he did, the woman took off running away. Just by appearance of a person, I think I can figure out their danger level. I believe movies have definitely played a part in influencing how I perceive the world around me. I really enjoyed reading this particular article. The opening paragraph, with its creepiness and its sense of danger, really grabbed my attention and allowed me to focus on the rest of the story.

I couldn't agree with you more when you talk about being scared or having to worry about someone following you because i have been in that cituation to and it is scary. I like how you talked about race and how it has to do with the story and the points that Staples' is trying to make. Although this paper is very contreversial, it can be taken in many ways. I also agree with you when you say that you can judge a man and how dangerous he is by the way he looks but also you have to remeber that you can never be too careful because some people are not so obvious.
