Personally, I really enjoyed reading Mike's essay. It was very strong and effective in a sense that he did a great job in making his subject material coherent to the reader. In his first paragraph, he used ridiculously extreme measures to describe his viewpoint on the matter, such as "Would I prefer castration over admitting that? Probably, yes..." I was easily able to relate to a lot of his material, and I felt that he was exactly right. MTV has definitely affected my life and the lives of many others because I have to admit that I was caught in the same trap. I would watch Total Request Live just about everyday. I fell for advertisements and the latest fashion tips and like Mike says that even though MTV portrays bad things to people, he comes back strong with how MTV has actually bettered his being because he knows, "How not to act" just by watching this channel and understanding how the people doing these things are wrong and I feel that it has done the same for me. He says that MTV has taught him how to be compassionate and a unique individual. He also states that its ok to be the same as everybody else for a little bit but one must find there true identity on there own. It has also taught him the "Golden Rule" which is "Treat others the way you would want to be treated." Mike also uses a very conversational and informative writing style. Whether he is right or wrong he pulls the reader in with his enticing descriptions of MTV's shows and how they are polluting this planet. Mike uses similes and metaphors to establish his point to the reader. These similes and metaphors help relate the reader to things that he or she may better understand. I believe Mike wrote a strong, easy to relate to, article that was enjoyable. I loved it.

Chace, I really strongly agree with you when you say that this has had an effect on your life because MTV has had a great affect on my life. Yes he does use really crude and extreme measures to describe his viewpoint. I also really agree with you when you say that this MTV thing taught Mike the golden rule because it did and it did because of the ways some of the shows portray the way of life and teach kids and people around the world how to not live your life and its sad to say that some people do life there life by the way of Beavis and Butthead.
Chace, you make an intuitive observation, "He says that MTV has taught him how to be compassionate and a unique individual. He also states that its ok to be the same as everybody else for a little bit but one must find there true identity on there own." Critical reading at its best - well done!
