This is an incredibly strange subject to write about. The way I will probably end up describing my tones and voice in writing will probably be completely different than the way a reader finds it. Usually my best writings are composed in a very conversational tone, littered with unusual diction and comparisons that probably only make sense to me. Every once in a while I ramble, go off subject but then somehow, at least in my eyes make a turn around and tie it all together. Lots of times when I am writing freely my mind is spitting images so fast that I can't seem to put them all onto paper and present them to the reader and I tend to forget that they aren't inside my head seeing how all the kinks work out. Obviously my writing style changes if i am directing my piece towards a certain audience. Either way i tend to stay somewhat conversational and casual but when I am writing for a class or a teacher I try to step it up a notch and clearly articulate my ideas and views. If i am writing to a peer or an audience of everyday people I guess I dumb it down a bit. I dont really find myself in that situation too often though, but when i do it's not as frilly and elaborate as a research paper or something of the sort may be. I think I read somewhere or someone once told me that the reading level newspapers are written at is equivalent to a fifth grader or something far below the collegiate level. This makes sense because then everyone, well, excluding illiterate people out there, can at least get a general understanding of the news and then the news reaches a broader spectrum of the population instead of only people with higher educations. I think that a somewhat conversational tone paired with many colorful examples and diction as well as clearly articulated ideas is very handy; anything too dense or thick can turn people off and even if the point of the argument or essay or what have you is brilliant, people don't want to read something that is dry, boring and passionless.

I agree, this was a very strange topic! That's really funny because I definitely wrote a similiar thing about my style. I think that being conversational is really good in a way :) It seems that you wrote this particular blog the same way. I think I did the same thing. So, in reality, I think that's what the point of this blog was - to figure out what our style really is. And by the way, I heard the same thing about the newspapers. I would have to say that I agree with you. Really, it only makes sense. A million different people choose to read the newspaper throughout their lives. Evidently, not everyone has the same level or reading.
