blog#11

Honestly, I thought I was going to fail miserably at this anti-ad assignment when I first heard about it, because even after 3 classes of Digital Design in high school, I retained no information about photoshop, or computers in general. I did really like the idea of getting to visually take a stab at the ad I decided to analyze though, instead of just writing about it (which is a talent I wasn’t born with). The adbusters.org site had fewer anti-ads then I expected, but it showed me techniques I could use, like, for example, taking the symbol of McDonalds and using it against them as the life line on a heart monitor, or taking a catch phrase and rewording it. I didn’t have to think long to figure out what I wanted to do for this paper. I only had one idea actually. CoverGirl.. contributed to two things I despise most: the pressure of image in our society, and animal testing. So I was already prepared to go to town on their ads and company. Creating the anti ad wound up being a lot less difficult than I had it built up in my mind to be, but probably because I just resorted to using powerpoint. I found some other anti-ads made by PETA and other organizations that that used photoshop though, and that were very graphic with the way they exposed CoverGirl’s use of animal testing. They really got the message across though. I decided to not be as graphic, but I liked the way my anti-ad came out. I think creating the idea for the anti-ad was my favorite part of the assignment. I liked taking the power away from their ads and completely using it against them. It was fun.

Deanna, I felt the exact same way that you did when we were first assigned this paper. I have never been good with Photoshop either, so I was a little concerned about creating my anti-ad, as well. When I started looking at advertisements to spoof, I looked over a lot of Cover Girl ads. I totally agree with you… their advertisements just encourage the constant pressure that society puts on women to “perfect” their physical appearance. I would love to read your paper sometime, because I would be curious to see how you “decoded” their advertisement strategies. I’m looking forward to seeing your anti-ad!
