BP 10

I feel as if Brent Staples wrote this article in an extremely intelligent and professional manner. Although he was describing his own issues, he was still able to distance himself from the subject in order to present the topic in a reasonable way. As he created the imagery of the first woman that was his ‘victim’, I began to relate this to the real world. Staples has a great point - these occurrences really do happen. I have seen it happen. And in my opinion, I think that it is just awful how human beings can have such a stereotypical idea of black men. Many people in the world instantly view them as dangerous as soon as they are slightly close to anyone. And seeing this all in the prospective of Staples, makes the audiences feel even worse. It is his personal thoughts on how it really is not fair. However, at the same time while describing his ‘victims’, Staples was still able to write this article in a way that was slightly objective and not as thrashing towards the reader. What he really could have done, was complain about all women and make general accusations about them all. But he refrained himself from blaming the entire society of women, and remained professional, leading to his point. As I quote, Staples states, “I came to doubt the virtues of intimidation early on.” He was explaining to the reader how he was able to distance himself from his younger friends that were going to get him into trouble. And honestly, he seems as though it was a great happening that he was able to notice the wrongdoings early on in his life. And in reality, I feel terrible for the young African - Americans that have the unfortunate event of this happening. Having been accused of something that you haven’t already done, nor planning on doing, is an awful feeling. It isn’t respectful and can merely depress anyone.

After reading Kayla's comment, I realized I might have been harsh on Staples in my comment. Staples was wrongly accused not once but twice for being something that he in fact was not. Being accused of something that you have not done is an awful feeling that no one should feel, but in reality, it does happen often. It's true, Staples could have ranted about women and white people being racist but he did not. He provided a stance, a point of view with facts to back it up and let the reader decide for his or her self about the matter.
